The Difference Between Fandoghi Pistachios and Akbari Pistachios

Pistachios come in different varieties, each with its own unique characteristics. Two popular types of pistachios, Fandoghi and Akbari, have many fans in both domestic and international markets. However, identifying them can be challenging. Today, we intend to examine the difference between Akbari and Fandoghi pistachios in terms of appearance, nutritional value, origin, and more.

What is the Difference Between Fandoghi and Akbari Pistachios?

Fandoghi and Akbari pistachios are both high-quality, popular types of pistachios, but there are differences in their appearance, taste, texture, and properties that give each its own dedicated fans. Below, we will examine these differences in more detail:

1. Appearance and Size

  • Fandoghi Pistachio (Round Pistachio): This pistachio, as its name (which means “hazelnut-like”) suggests, has a round, spherical, and small appearance similar to a hazelnut. Because of its round shape, its “ounce” (the number of pistachios in a specific weight) is higher, meaning there are more pistachios per kilogram. It is generally considered the smallest commercial type of pistachio.
  • Akbari Pistachio (Super Long Pistachio): In comparison to the Fandoghi, it has a distinct elongated, long, and almond-like appearance. This pistachio is known as the most luxurious and longest type of Iranian pistachio. The Akbari pistachio is very popular for export and ceremonial nut mixes due to its beautiful appearance and widely split (smiling) shell.

2. Texture

  • Fandoghi Pistachio: It has a smaller kernel with a dense and crunchy texture.
  • Akbari Pistachio: It has a larger, more elongated, and “meatier” kernel, which provides a fuller bite when eaten.

3. Taste

  • Fandoghi Pistachio: It has a classic, nutty, and pleasant flavor. Due to its smaller size and more affordable price, it is very common in mixed nuts.
  • Akbari Pistachio: Its flavor is often described as richer, slightly sweeter, and more delicious. Due to its luxurious appearance and excellent taste, it usually has a higher price.
